Forced forgiveness

For some deep hurts we may not yet be ready to forgive.  For starters, it may be best to just gently hold the hurt.  It might be important to forgive yourself for not yet being ready to let go. Forgiveness cannot be forced; it cannot be manufactured.

Remember your own goodness.  Let it open into a sense of the goodness of other people. This is the place within you from which forgiveness comes. From here it becomes possible to forgive.

The Dalai Lama was once asked if he could ever forgive the Chinese for their military occupation of Tibet and systematic destruction of Tibetan monasteries and culture.  His response, ‘They’ve already taken my country. Why should I let them have my mind, too?’
